Security/Tech for Dummies

Many people have asked me "Billy, you're so good with technology. How can a non-technical person such as myself stay secure in today's security focused world?"
I've recommended various tools in the past and I wanted to collect all the ones that I use and explain them here in a fashion that was easy for techical and non-technical people to understand. Not all of these tools are security focused but are all useful.
Tool Type Name Review
Password Manager 1Password The first thing I always recommend people get is a password manager. Password managers store all your passwords in an encrypted file. You only need to remember your password to get into this file and the manager will keep track of the rest. Password managers can generate passwords for you, reset passwords for you (on popular websites), and will autofill passwords all into your web browser, applications, phones, etc. They can also stroe MFA/2FA codes in them so you can doubly secure the accounts you use. Storing your passwords in your iPhone's notes app is not a good idea!
Security Focused Web Browser FireFox Many people I know use Chrome. While Chrome has many useful tools and is very easy to use, many people would be extremely surprised to know how much information is collected about your browsing habits by using Google Chrome, even if you are using Incognito Mode. While Firefox is definitely not the most security and privacy focused out there (there are some very locked down and secure web browsers out there), it definitely is excellent at protecting regular people's privacy. Additionally, Firefox has pretty much all the same features that Google Chrome has without the privacy issues and the significant memory performance issues that Google Chrome has.
File Transfer Swiss Transfer Looking to send a large file to someone but don't want to upload it to your Dropbox or Google Drive? SwissTransfer is a tool created by Infomaniak, an "ethical cloud" company based in Switzerland. It is a completely free service that allows you to send files up to 50GB in size to anyone. Simple and efficient.
Privacy Browser Add-on Facebook Container Facebook has a tendency to collect information about literally everything that it can touch. One of the things it can do is access other portions of your web browser while it is open. Have Facebook open in one tab and your Bath and Bodyworks shopping list open in another tab? Yeah it can see that. The Facebook Container Add-on will isolate Facebook and Facebook owned services in their own tabs so they can't see outside of it.
Ad Blocker uBlock Origin Hate seeing ads while browsing the web? Get uBlock Origin Ad Blocker. Simple concept. Install it and it can block ads for you. Many ad blockers collect your information or let through ads that have been paid to be let through the ad blocker. uBlock Origin does not.
VPN Your Choice For those of you who don't know what a VPN is, Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) are services that allow you to hide your internet browsing activities, location, browsing habits, etc. from people, companies, governments. These days, due to the sensitive nature of most things, going without a VPN is not recommended. There are a lot of VPNs out there, recommending one to anyone is like recommending someone a car without knowing what kind of car they are looking for. So the link I have provided is to a site that has done all the research on the 70 most popular VPN services out there and will show you the Pros and Cons of each one.
